UI Students Protest 82-Day Power Outage at UCH
University of Ibadan (UI) students have taken to the streets to protest an ongoing 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH), demanding urgent action from authorities.
Hundreds of students from the University of Ibadan in Oyo State organized a peaceful protest to express their dissatisfaction with an 82-day power outage at University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan.
It has been reported that UCH serves as the teaching hospital for medical students from UI.
Our correspondent discovered that UCH has been facing a power outage for the past year because of outstanding debts owed to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
In March 2024, the hospital’s power supply was disconnected by IBEDC because of outstanding electricity bills.
In November 2023, the electricity distribution company also cut off power to the hospital for similar reasons.
Our correspondent discovered that the power supply has yet to be restored.
It has been reported that students from the University of Ibadan held a peaceful protest on Wednesday morning to voice their dissatisfaction with the conditions at the hospital.
According to our correspondent, who is observing the procession, the students were led by Bolaji Aweda, President of the Students’ Union (SU).
Aweda, in an interview with OBASANJONEWS, mentioned that the institution’s students have been directly impacted.
We are demonstrating against the current situation, and naturally, our students are impacted.
For 82 days, UCH has been without electricity because it hasn’t paid its bill to IBEDC.
He stated that IBEDC requires UCH to clear its debt before power will be restored.
