Governor Monday Okpebholo Announces Key Appointments in Edo State Government
Following his inauguration as the newly elected Governor of Edo State, Senator Monday Okpebholo has made significant strides in shaping his administration by appointing prominent figures to key positions. Among the appointments is Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, who has been designated as the Commissioner for Health.
This appointment is particularly significant as Dr. Oshiomhole, son of former Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole, will be tasked with addressing the state’s pressing healthcare challenges. His appointment is expected to bring new perspectives and strategies to the state’s health sector, which remains a critical area of concern for the administration.
In addition to the health portfolio, Governor Okpebholo has selected Barrister Musa Ikhilor to serve as the Secretary to the State Government (SGG). As the SGG, Barrister Ikhilor will play an instrumental role in the day-to-day running of the state’s government, ensuring the effective implementation of policies and coordination among various arms of the administration.
Another key figure appointed by Governor Okpebholo is Dr. Samson Osagie, a former Minority Whip of the House of Representatives. Dr. Osagie has been named the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Designate. His extensive experience in the legislative field, including his tenure in the National Assembly, positions him as a strong candidate to guide the state’s legal affairs and ensure the rule of law is upheld throughout Edo.
A press release issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, confirmed that the names of Dr. Osagie and Dr. Oshiomhole will be forwarded to the Edo State House of Assembly for formal confirmation. The move is part of the governor’s effort to ensure that qualified individuals are appointed to drive the state’s development in a variety of sectors.
Dr. Samson Osagie, who will assume the role of Attorney-General, is a seasoned legal practitioner with an extensive background. Called to the Nigerian Bar in March 1995, Dr. Osagie has made significant contributions to the legal community. He is currently the vice president of the African Bar Association (West African Region) and has a history of serving in both the Edo State House of Assembly and the House of Representatives. During his time in the National Assembly, he rose to the position of Minority Whip, where he demonstrated his leadership and legislative acumen.
Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, who will take on the role of Health Commissioner, has an impressive academic and professional background. He completed his primary and secondary education at St. Anne’s Primary School and Command Secondary School. He furthered his studies at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS). Dr. Oshiomhole then pursued a Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans, specializing in Environmental Health, Toxicology, and Disaster Management.
Barrister Musa Ikhilor, who will assume the position of SSG, is a highly accomplished legal expert with a rich educational background. Born on August 6, 1980, at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Edo State, Barr. Ikhilor obtained his LL.B from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 2008, graduating with Second Class Upper Division honors. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2009, also earning a Second Class Upper Division in his B.L. Barr. Ikhilor continued his education, completing a Master’s degree in Telecommunications Law (LL.M) at Ahmadu Bello University in 2017. With over 11 years of experience in legislative drafting, parliamentary administration, and constitutional governance, Barr. Ikhilor is well-equipped to handle the complexities of his new role.
