Ogun Governor, Deputy Promises Not To Forget Sacrifice Of Armed Forces

By Ayo Kareem

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has charged Nigerians not to forget the selflessness and dedication exhibited by men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces, who put their lives on the line to defend the sovereignty and unity of the nation.

Governor Abiodun, who made this known during the special Jumat Service to mark the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, at the Central Mosque, Kobiti, Abeokuta, added that it was on this basis that Ogun State is joining the entire nation in remembering and honouring the sacrifices made by armed forces to protect and ensure peace and security of the nation.

Represented by his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Gov Abiodun stressed that the state had the tradition of supporting and honouring the Armed Forces, emphasising the critical role they play in maintaining the stability of the society, saying as the most industrial and improved state in terms of foreign direct investment in Nigeria, his administration, understands that progress and development cannot thrive without a safe and secured environment, promising that government would continue to make significant and continuous efforts to enhance security and support the Armed Forces and other paramilitary agencies.

“Our Armed Forces have not only defended us against external threats but have also been instrumental in tackling internal security challenges and maintaining law and order. Their commitment to duty and their unwavering loyalty to our nation is truly commendable”, he said.

The state’s helmsman implored the citizenry to have a renewed commitment to the ideals the past heroes fought for, as they reflect on the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces, reiterating that it was a collective responsibility as citizens, to ensure that these sacrifices were not in vain.

In his sermon, Musafir of Egbaland, Sheik Taofeek Amolegbe, said the departed souls in the Nigerian Army made great sacrifices for the country, as well as showed their love for the country and families, noting that their legacies remain indelible.

He noted that conflict was inevitable in any given society, adding that those who died in either the Civil War or Second World War, died for the unity and peace of the country, stressing that the yearly remembrance was a good way of honouring them.

The cleric urged Nigerians to play their role towards the development of the country, saying the government alone cannot provide the wherewithal for its citizenry.

Also speaking, the Alake and paramount ruler of Egbaland, HRM, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, expressed optimism that Nigeria would be great, praying that God would continue to repose the souls of the departed and prayed for God’s protection over those in active service.

Earlier, the Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr Toyin Taiwo, appreciated the men of the Nigerian Army who laid down their lives for the development of the country, praying that God would continue to rest their souls.

While saluting officers in the Nigerian Army for protecting Nigerians and maintaining peace, Dr. Taiwo also saluted their courage, selflessness and commitment to service, praying for God’s protection in their endeavours.
The highlight of the programme was reading from the Holy Qur’an and prayers for Governor Dapo Abiodun, the state and the nation at large.
