Condemnation of the Nigerian Air Force Invasion of Ikeja Electric: Upholding the Rule of Law
By Abayomi’s Odunowo
In a profoundly concerning turn of events, the Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu Support Group (AATSG) has articulated its firm condemnation of the Nigerian Air Force’s unlawful invasion of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (Ikeja Electric). This regrettable incident, which occurred on March 17, 2025, saw over 100 armed personnel forcibly engaging with the staff of a civil entity over an accumulated electricity debt of ₦4 billion. Such actions carry profound implications that ripple far beyond the immediate context of the dispute, challenging the very foundations of our democracy
The assault on Ikeja Electric signifies much more than an operational mishap or a mere enforcement of fiscal obligations; it represents a disturbing erosion of the rule of law in Nigeria. Witness accounts reveal that staff members, including pregnant women, faced physical assault while the property was wantonly destroyed. This naked show of force by a military institution in a civil matter is not only inappropriate but entirely unacceptable in a democratic society. It raises significant questions regarding state agencies’ behavior and adherence to lawful conduct, especially when managing financial disputes.
As Nigeria progresses under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose administration emphasizes democratic values, transparency, and accountability, such actions starkly contrast the principles we strive to uphold. The expectation that government entities model appropriate behavior underscores the gravity of this incident. The Nigerian Air Force, as a symbol of national integrity and protection, has not only undermined the democratic process but also disrespected the lives and rights of innocent citizens.
The situation demands urgent action to rectify this disconcerting chapter in Nigeria’s governance. The AATSG calls upon His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Chief of Air Staff to investigate this incident immediately and thoroughly. Accountability is paramount; responsible officers should face appropriate disciplinary action for their involvement in this act of lawlessness. We insist that such behavior, particularly from a governmental institution, cannot be tolerated.
Moreover, we urge the Nigerian Air Force to engage in constructive negotiations with Ikeja Electric. Establishing a structured repayment plan for the ₦4 billion debt is imperative. It is wholly unacceptable for any government institution to default on fiscal obligations and then resort to violent measures to redress the situation. Rather than aggression, negotiation must become the cornerstone of resolving financial disputes.
Additionally, we extend our call to the National Assembly and the Ministry of Power to enact vital policies that prevent security agencies from resorting to force in civil disputes. Legislative oversight is essential to ensure that all government institutions meet their financial commitments to service providers. By implementing strict regulatory frameworks and oversight, we can fortify the rule of law and create an environment where civil rights are respected.
Immediate government intervention is necessary to restore public confidence in our institutions. The paradox seen in the actions of the Nigerian Air Force, an entity designed to protect and uphold the law, now acting in blatant contradiction to it, must be rectified. Nigeria’s pathway towards social justice, transparency, and accountability hinges on addressing misunderstandings between governmental institutions and service providers.
AATSG remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for good governance, transparency, and justice for all Nigerians. Upholding the rule of law is not merely an aspiration but a duty that lies within our shared responsibility as citizens and leaders. Our rigorous condemnation of the invasion of Ikeja Electric should act as a clarion call to all stakeholders: let us collaboratively reaffirm our commitment to democratic values and restore integrity to our institutions.
As we stand at this pivotal juncture, may we collectively strive to ensure that law, order, and civil discourse prevail over coercion and violence. Let us remind ourselves and the world that Nigeria upholds justice for all.
