Story By Akinola Emmanuel, March 11, 2021

In compliance with the directive of the national body of the organized labours in Nigeria, Oyo state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC have staged a peaceful protest to the Oyo state house of assembly.

Our correspondent reports that the labour unions were received by the deputy speaker of the Oyo state house of assembly, Mr Abiodun Fadeyi, Chairman, house committee on Information, Mr Kazeem Olayanju and committee on Agriculture, Mr Peter Ojedokun on behalf of the speaker, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin.

The protest which took off at the labour secretariate, Agodi, Ibadan and terminated at the oyo state house of assembly complex, secretariate, was organised to reject a bill at the national assembly seeking to remove the national minimum wage from the exclusive list to the concurrent list.

The bill which has scaled through the second reading also seeks to decentralise the national minimum wage to be determined by state governors

Receiving the organised labour leaders, the speaker, Oyo state Assembly Mr Adebo Ogundoyin, said the assembly would painstakingly scrutiny the bill during plenary to determine its possibilities of rejection or scaling through legislative approval in the state.

Mr Ogundoyin said the assembly would not succumb to pressure from any quarters but follows due process that would fulfil the wish of the people.

Also speaking, Special adviser to governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state on labour affairs, Mr Titilope Sodo assured NLC and TUC that the state governor would continue to work in the interest of the workers.

Earlier, Oyo state Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC Mr Kayode Martins and his Trade Union Congress, TUC counterpart, Mr Akanni Oguniran said the bill if passed into law would encourage modern slavery by state governors and consistent industrial actions across the country.

They insisted that the organised labour would do the needful to ensure that the bill was not accepted.
