ONLY A UNITED YORUBA FRONT CAN PRODUCE 2023 NIGERIA PRESIDENT-ADEDUNTAN AT YPS SUMMIT
BEING THE PAPER PRESENTED BY Chief (DR) AZEEZ POPOOLA ADEDUNTAN AT THE PAN YORUBA SUMMIT HELD AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTRE, UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN TODAY, 21ST JANUARY, 2021
All protocols duly observed.
My name is Chief(Dr) Azeez POPOOLA ADEDUNTAN,an international cardiovascular surgeon,PRESIDENT ,RILGA,LLC-a professional corporation in Atlanta,USA,President Adeduntan Cardiovascular and diagnostic centre(ACDC)Ibadan,
DIRECTOR DR AZEEZ POPOOLA ADEDUNTAN FOUNDATION (DAPAF),Chairman and PUBLISHER Nigerian Alert Newspaper,Recipient YR 2020 SOUTH WESTERN NIGERIA HEROES AWARD, Osi Basorun of Ibadan land.
First, and foremost,I will like to thank Almighty GOD and the conveners of this summit for finding me worthy to contribute to today’s discussion and dialogue, which should pull all of us together as Yorubas inside the geographical entity called NIGERIA.
Indeed it is a truism that “UNITED WE STAND,DIVIDED WE FALL.”
We Yoruba people -descendants of Oduduwa(our progenitor )are an ethnic group that inhabits western Africa, mainly the countries of Nigeria, Benin, Ghana, Togo, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Senegal and The Gambia;as well as the slaves taken against their will to foreign lands of USA,CUBA,BRAZIL
,Jamaica etc.as spoils of internecine wars among our forefathers.
The Yoruba constitute around 47 million people worldwide. The vast majority of this population is from Nigeria, where the Yoruba make up 21% of the country's groups in Africa.
For several years after the amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914,the Yorubas were the PACE SETTER and in the forefront of Nigeria in education,in commerce and in political leadership-all now reversed due to complacency and a terrible unitary Federal GOVERNMENT ,as opposed to the COLONIAL PERIOD 1914-1960.
For instance, Chief Christopher Alexander Sapara Williams CMG (14 July 1855 – 15 March 1915) was the first indigenous Nigerian lawyer, called to the English bar on 17 November 1879.
Nathaniel Thomas King (14 July 1847 – 12 June 1884) was one of the earliest western-trained doctors to practise medicine in Nigeria.of Abeokuta origin.
Sir Adetokunbo Adegboyega Ademola, (born February 1, 1906, Abeokuta, Nigeria—died January 29, 1993, Lagos, Nigeria),
was the first indigenous chief justice of the Nigerian Supreme Court (1958–72) and a cofounder of the Nigerian Law School.
The first university in NIGERIA,built in 1948 was in Yoruba land,-Ibadan,same with first television station in Africa, same with the tallest building -COCOA house.
Things are no longer rosy with and for the Yorubas of today since we are now living in a unitary Government where the centre controls the largest chunk of revenues compared to the old times when YORUBAS and other regions had regional GOVERNMENT,aborted by the ill fated January 15th 1966 coup deta.
Unemployment,insecurity of lives and property,corruption,
Economic stagnation due to dependence on one perishable commodity-oil,neglect of farming for white collar jobs, lack of functional education as evidenced by graduates roaming the streets, kidnapping by local indigenes and by foreigners ,armed robberies
,”419 ,”for money etc .That is our situation presently
For a better tomorrow,I suggest the following set forth here under:
a)Restructuring of NIGERIA back to regional Government rather than the drum beat of secession and war.
Only those who have not seen war before are calling for war.
War is deadly, family dislocating, with attendant physical and emotional scars that can be lifelong.Every war ends on the negotiation table.
Hence it is better to “JAW JAW than WAR WAR”.
No nation has ever survived two civil wars(GENS Akinrinade & Danjuma).
War is always a last option in a civilized society.
It is a road that will leave the war mongers to nowhere.
B)Introduction of functional educational system that allows the graduates to be creative in terms of skill acquisitions rather than white collar jobs
C)Reintroduction of CIVICS and HISTORY back into our educational curriculum.
D)State policing systems as is done in other federal structures throughout the world. The fear that GOVERNORS will use it against opponents or opposing politician is majorly fear mongering and unfounded.
E)infrastructural development-roads,farm settlements, airways ,railways and seaports to create job opportunities
F)Encouragement of citizenry to develop interest in farming which was the bedrock of our economy prior to the discovery of OIL at OLOIBIRI NIger Delta region.in 1957.
G)Stoppage of proliferation of half baked ,ill staffed and ill equipped glorified secondary schools called universities where the head of Department is a (first degree holder and where professors are being borrowed from other institutions)that are saturating the work force with educated illiterates that cannot contribute well to the national economy and development.Nigeria has now more than 200 of those so called “universities “with few vacancies for employment for the lucky and well connected.
H)Voting and electing efficient, effective ,competent and functional leadership like AWOLOWO. History and civic education will help our people in this regard. “VOTE & EAT”
a slang for sell your votes and eat is counterproductive for any decent citizen and society ,except of course an Hobbesian society
I.)Teaching our children YORUBA language and speaking it to them. The First sign of a dying tribe and culture is the loss of the language. It is head tripping for any YORUBA MAN to think English or any language is better than or superior to YORUBA.THE IGBOS, HAUSAS,CHINESE,
JAPANESE will almost always ENSURE that the means of communication to their people is their native language.
As the Nigerian political landscape becomes ever more plagued by primordial politics shaped by erroneous views of the past and present, and the Yoruba influence in the overall shaping of Nigerian partisan politics is waning ,the need for this summit has become more real.
I wish to appeal to participants at this summit to put into their heart first -the interest of the Yoruba nation.
For instance,The contribution of Chief Awolowo to the socio-economic, political and intellectual advancement of the Yorubas is undeniable even by his detractors.
Indeed, Yoruba politicians today still consider the appropriation of the Awolowo image and mien as necessary for their legitimization ,rather than being their own men.ONLY almighty GOD can clone or replicate chief AWOLOWO.
The best we YORUBAS can do is to see him as our role model and give selfless service to YORUBA LAND and Nigeria where we are a component part.
As the Yoruba have partially recently returned to the limelight in national politics with the successful merging of parties that created the now-ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), it is indeed an apposite time to reconsider what it means to be Yorubas individually, collectively, philosophically, and idealistically at home and beyond the geographical boundaries of the Republic of Nigeria.
It is on this note that I am assuring all our leaders, brothers and sisters in this hall that I, Chief Dr Azeez Popoola Adeduntan, the Osi Bashorun of Ibadanland and international cardio vascular surgeon of note ,declare that I am on the same page with you and will support any initiative of ensuring that a Yoruba occupies the Aso Villa come 2023 so we can move the nation forward.
In fighting, boot leaking, pull him down tactics, selling out will not help our cause.
We must present our best candidate for 2023 presidency. This gathering and most YORUBAS know who the cap fits without any equivocation or “BAD BELLE”
I thank all of u for ur attention and time.
May God bless all of us, YORUBA LAND
and the federal republic of NIGERIA
