An Ibadan based educationist and Proprietor, Adesina College, Ibadan, Mr Adejare Adesina has faulted the Federal government and the minister of education, Mallam Adamu Adamu over what he described as failure in the education sector of the nation.
Mr Adesina disclosed this during an interview with Nigeria Alert on the state of the sector in the last six years.
He pointed out that many institutes and training school for teachers have been abandoned and allow to die natural death due to lack of fund to maintain such thereby leaving such institute to be ineffective or not functioning again.
The educationist said most of the present day teachers are job seekers who only find consolation in teaching and not ready to give their best.
“Many of the teachers accepted the job just like an option, they are not interested in imparting in the children.
Some will go in the morning and leave the school anytime they wish not monitoring the students and show no concern.”
“l always tell my children that either they read for exam or not they are on their own, you have to write what you read.”
He stated that teachers are not being properly supervised, if at all there is any form of monitoring by agencies of government.
“inability to monitor the teachers is affecting education system, how many are genuinely taught that can go to institutions abroad and use that certificate for employment? We have a long way to go.
The present government approach to the education system is woeful. The minister of Education is not also making an impact,he has been appointed as a federal minister of education and he’s not assisting the system.
WAEC should be April this year but they couldn’t write the exam because federal government fail to reopened after COVID 19, it was only governor of Oyo state that opened their schools, he took the risk and it was successful, before others started rethinking.”
Mr Adesina further said the system is falling because government couldn’t put the required fund to the system especially with the low budget allocation to the education sector.
He called on parents to be ready to monitor their children and not to leave all to the doorstep of the government.
He commended the Oyo State governor, Engr Seyi Makinde for the recent recruitment of teachers and timely opening of schools in the state even when the federal government was still talking about not opening schools.
