Adeduntan Sues Sahara Reporters, Biodun Ladepo N2 Billion over Defamatory Article

Following an article written by one Biodun Ladepo to defame the Honourable Commissioner of Health in Oyo State, Dr. Azeez Popoola Adeduntan and published by Sahara Reporters, an online news medium, the health commissioner has slammed a suit of N2 billion each on all the parties to the suit.

The writer of the libelous article, Biodun Ladepo had in a malicious write up titled: ‘’Neither Azeez Adeduntan Nor Bayo Shittu Should Govern Oyo State…Ever;’’ allegedly set out to damage the reputation of the health commissioner. He is also alleged to have fabricated lies against Dr. Adeduntan in respect of statement made by the health commissioner during a radio interview in Ibadan

The suit followed the expiration of a 7-day ultimatum to retract given to the writer and publisher of the article by the lawyer to Dr. Adeduntan, Barrister James Uzualu.

Joined as defendants in the suit which was instituted in the High Court of Oyo State, Ibadan are: Biodun Ladepo; Sahara Reporters Media Incorporated; Incorporated Trustees of Sahara Reporters Media Foundation and Omoyele Sowore, publisher of the online news medium.

According to the writ of summon made available to NIGERIAN ALERT, Dr. Adeduntan declared that “the words contained in Sahara Reporters’ online publication were false, malicious and as such libelous.

Dr. Adeduntan is also seeking an order for the payment of N2 billion each by the defendants as ‘aggravated and general damages for the libel contained in the publication’ circulated online by Sahara Reporters.

The Harvard-trained cardio-vascular surgeon is also seeking a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants, their privies, agents, friends and colleagues from writing or publishing any libelous words against him in addition to an order for the retraction of the libelous and defamatory words and an unreserved apology to be published on the front page of Punch Newspaper and Sahara Reporters online page.
